I prayed for this

On behalf of Evening Daily Prayers Group

Thank you for all that Captain Tom came to mean to this nation during the last year of his life and for the astonishing success of his walks round his garden in the days leading up to his hundredth birthday. We have lost a national treasure. May the example of his gentle wisdom, good humour and humility continue to inspire others to believe, in these dark days for our nation, that they have something to offer and can make a difference in the world. May he rest in peace, and may his family find consolation in the nation’s great love for him.

Thank you for Professor Chris Whitty, Sir Patrick Vallance and all the scientists, medics, epidemiologists and statisticians who advise our government. Thank you that so much is understood about viruses and the way they spread, for without such knowledge the effects of this pandemic would be far, far worse. Thank you for their ability to give clear explanations of complex matters, for their calm and careful responses to every question they are asked, and for their dedication to their work.

Thank you for all the people involved in the development of vaccines or in making them available to the whole population. They really have brought the “light at the end of the tunnel” much closer.

Today I pray for young children. They may be confused about why they can’t go to school or see their friends, and they may be unnecessarily fearful of the virus. May they be helped to understand, and may the love shown to them dispel their fears.

I pray for young people. Their education is disrupted, and, because the virus is unlikely to make them seriously ill, they may be tempted to ignore Covid restrictions and risk spreading the disease to others. Help them to be patient and cautious.

And I pray for the elderly, who may be confused about why they still have to live under restrictions even though they have had the vaccine. Grant them your comfort and peace.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation. What shall I fear?” (Adapted from Psalm 27:1)

May the Lord grant to us all the precious gift of sleep this night. Amen.
