Marriage Banns
If you’ve selected this page the chances are that you’re getting married and need your banns to be read at Emmanuel. The reading, or publication, of the banns, is a legal requirement within the Church of England, and is the term for the public announcement by the minister during a normal church service that two people wish to marry, and a chance for anyone in the congregation to put forward a reason why the wedding should not take place.
Your banns will only need to be read here if you are getting married at Emmanuel, or if the wedding is elsewhere and you live in the streets in the Emmanuel Parish.
If you need us to read your banns, please contact the church office by e-mail, or on 020 8688 6676, at least four months before your wedding day. There is a small fee payable.
The banns will be read at our family service at 9.30 on a Sunday morning, for 3 weeks in a row. Couples often like to come and hear them being read, and you would be more than welcome.
Once the banns have been read for the third time a certificate will be drawn up, which you will need to collect from the church office. This will need to be shown to minister at the church where you are getting married before he will allow the ceremony to go ahead.
